Notably, the spinner took the Indian Premier League (IPL) by storm during his inaugural season in 2012. His exceptional performance earned him the prestigious title of Player of the Tournament, guiding the Kolkata Knight Riders to victory. Despite sustaining his brilliance for the next two seasons, he faced a setback in November 2015 when he was suspended from international cricket for his bowling action.
After receiving clearance to resume bowling in April 2016, Narine's appearances for the West Indies became sporadic. His last T20I outing occurred in August 2019. Although he continued to shine in the IPL, West Indies omitted him from the 2021 T20 World Cup squad, citing concerns about his fitness.
Throughout his international career, the 35-year-old spinner managed to secure an impressive tally of 165 wickets across various formats.
In his retirement announcement, Sunil Narine expressed his gratitude, saying, "I appreciate it has been over four years since I last played for West Indies but today I am announcing my retirement from international cricket. In the public eye, I'm known for being reserved and not saying much. However, behind the scenes, there are a select few individuals who have provided me with steadfast support throughout my career. They played a pivotal role in helping me achieve my lifelong dream of representing the West Indies, and it is to them that I extend my most profound appreciation.
Narine also disclosed that the ongoing Super50 Cup would mark his final appearance in List A cricket. "Winning this Super50 Cup tournament will be the perfect call-off," he declared. "Remaining this I will continue to in the franchise world in the foreseeable future."
As Sunil Narine takes a step back from international cricket, fans and the cricketing community will undoubtedly reflect on his contributions to the sport, remembering his exceptional talent and the memorable moments he created throughout his career.
